Pradaxa Death and Heart Attack Lawsuits

Pradaxa Deaths LawsuitPrescription drug Pradaxa is a popular anticoagulant (blood-thinner) used on the market to try to prevent strokes and other blood clotting issues. Pradaxa is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim, a private German drug maker. Recent studies have suggested that there may be significant and dangerous side effects of Pradaxa, even potentially resulting in Pradaxa deaths.

The makers of Pradaxa recently acknowledged that they are aware of 260 Pradaxa deaths worldwide thus far. This likely means that there may be far more Pradaxa deaths that they are presently unaware of. According to Boehringer Ingelheim, they take, “all reports about side effects and deaths very seriously and continuously monitor the use of all its medication including Pradaxa.”

Some of the Pradaxa deaths are likely caused by a malfunctioning of the kidneys. The kidneys are responsible for eventually filtering the Pradaxa out of the patient’s body. If the kidneys fail, it may lead to an overdose which can lead to uncontrolled bleeding within the patient; a major cause of Pradaxa deaths.

Regulators in Japan have urged Pradaxa manufacturers, Boehringer Ingelheim to issue a strong warning to doctors about the dangers of internal bleeding caused by Pradaxa. The regulators state that this bleeding can be potentially fatal and lead to Pradaxa deaths. This is a tricky situation for Boehringer Ingelheim because this is a fairly new market, and analysts predict that the market may be worth as much as $20 billion worldwide.

The European version of the FDA, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) declared that they will continue to monitor closely the safety and efficacy of prescription Pradaxa for patients potentially suffering from strokes. European regulators recently required Pradaxa to carry additional warning information about the risk of internal bleeding. They are now required to tell patients that they should have their kidneys checked prior to taking Pradaxa in order to prevent potential internal bleeding and even Pradaxa-related deaths.

All of the additional warnings and safety checks have somewhat diminished the previously safe image of drugs like Pradaxa. For decades patients have been using warfarin, which has been the industry standard. It is more of a hassle to use than the newer pills like Pradaxa, but it may in fact be safer. Studies show that there have been more than 250 reported Pradaxa deaths worldwide.

Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that they will conduct their own study, reviewing the data retrieved from other studies. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has decided to review the Pradaxa death results to see if the drug is excessively harmful.

The numerous reports of Pradaxa deaths have been causing significant concerns for months. Especially since Pradaxa is such a relatively new drug on the market. A report documented by the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices (ISMP) is particularly damning of Pradaxa. Their study stated that Pradaxa patients reported more serious adverse effects than 98.7% of the other drugs that they reviewed.

These complaints were largely related to the uncontrolled bleeding that has led to more than 250 Pradaxa deaths thus far.

Pradaxa is also experiencing controversy in New Zealand where the government is being criticized for compensating those suffering from Pradaxa injuries too quickly.

Much of the current press about Pradaxa deaths centers on the uncontrolled bleeding caused by the popular anticoagulant. There have also been reports that Pradaxa may cause heart attacks and cerebral hemorrhaging as well.
